The MultiAdaptS3 project aims to explore how Mediterranean semiarid shrub populations respond to drought when combined with other biotic and abiotic stresses such as warming and competition. Recognizing that plants in natural conditions face multiple simultaneous stresses, the project investigates whether responses to drought alone can predict adaptive responses in more complex, realistic environments. It also seeks to quantify the potential for evolutionary adaptation under increased aridity and assess how this potential is influenced by additional stressors. By combining common garden experiments with field-based quantitative genetics, MultiAdaptS3 will enhance our understanding of phenotypic plasticity, adaptive variation, and microevolutionary processes, ultimately improving predictions of plant responses to climate change.
