This project addresses the urgent issue of declining freshwater biodiversity by focusing on high-altitude lake ecosystems, which are highly sensitive to environmental change. The main objective is to understand how the function and structure of lake food webs respond to environmental variability.

The research uses a multidisciplinary approach, combining novel fieldwork (eDNA) in Spanish mountain lakes with macroecological analyses of global databases and a comprehensive data synthesis. This integrated approach aims to understand how local food webs and global biodiversity patterns are affected by climate change and other human pressures. The project’s outcomes will provide critical insights for developing effective conservation and management strategies for these vulnerable ecosystems.
