The MultiAdaptS3 project aims to explore how shrub populations in the semi-arid Mediterranean respond to drought when combined with other biotic and abiotic stresses, such as warming and competition. Recognizing that plants in natural conditions face multiple stresses simultaneously, the project investigates whether responses to drought alone can predict adaptive responses in more complex and realistic environments. It also seeks to quantify the potential for evolutionary adaptation under increased aridity and assess how this potential is influenced by additional stresses. By combining common garden experiments with quantitative field genetics, MultiAdaptS3 will enhance our understanding of phenotypic plasticity, adaptive variation, and microevolutionary processes, leading to improved predictions of plant responses to climate change.
