On the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of Carlos Linneo, a key figure in the history of the system of classification of living organisms, Taxonomy Recognition Day will be celebrated on 23 May. This awareness day is promoted by the European project TETTRIs.

At the Global Change Research Institute we host numerous experts in taxonomy, dedicated to the study and classification of various groups of species. A prominent example is Dr. Tamara Villaverde, principal investigator at the URJC within the iSedge project, funded by the TETTRIS consortium. Her work focuses on the comprehensive classification of the family Ciperaceae.

Taxonomy becomes crucially important in a context where one million species are threatened with extinction, many of them still unidentified. Naming a species is the first fundamental step towards its protection. Without taxonomy, the understanding, protection and restoration of planetary biodiversity is seriously compromised.

In the framework of the TETTRIs project, an awareness campaign has been launched inviting the scientific community, students and nature lovers to raise awareness of the importance of taxonomy. The initiative consists of photographing any form of life, from algae and plants to animals, fungi or microorganisms, identifying its scientific name and sharing the image on social networks using the hashtag #NameItToSaveIt.
