I am a plant community and agroecologist with interests in the mechanisms determining community assembly, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In the past, my research has focused on high-alpine ecosystems and the role of cushion foundation species as ecosystem engineers. More recently, I apply these ecological concepts of competition, niche differentiation and facilitation to agroecosystems and study the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying biodiversity effects on ecosystem functioning and services in annual and perennial cropping systems through research on intercropping and agroforestry.
