Our researcher, Gregorio Aragón Rubio, and his colleagues showcase the diversity of lichens on the volcanoes of the Campo de Calatrava region. These organisms, the result of a symbiosis between a fungus and one or more photosynthetic organisms, are true pioneers in the colonization of these volcanic environments, often considered inhospitable.
The study helps us better understand how lichens adapt to extreme conditions and what role they play in soil formation and the recovery of altered ecosystems. The findings are compiled in an informative brochure, available on the website of the Calatrava Volcanoes Geopark: https://geoparquevolcanesdecalatrava.es/guias-y-folletos/
